and belt buckles. Edward Aguilar is the only silversmith to
successfully make liquid-silver necklaces in a square format. Take a
look at the Quandelacy and the Quam Zuni fetish necklaces. James and
Doris Coriz make reasonably priced turquoise "hishi" style

Cody Hunter, Navajo Silversmith
Cody Hunter is a 20 year veteran of Navajo silversmithing. His
bracelets and belt buckles portray Navajo life as he saw it when he
was a youngster. It is from these experiences that he develops the
story themes for his bracelets.
Cody's "Inner Beauty" Bracelet >>>His three
main themes are the Storyteller, the Home Scene, and Running Horses.
Included with be a background of rocks in Canyon de Chelly, including
Spider Rock. He will have a mix of summer shelters, grandmother
storytellers talking to her grandchildren, weavers, shepherds, horses,
rabbits, dogs, cactus, and just about anything you could imagine that
would have been in the Canyon. He still lives in Chinle, AZ, the Navajo
town at the mouth of Canyon de Chelly, and frequently goes into the
Canyon.
He makes his bracelets by using a very fine jewelers hand saw,
cutting out the figures. To achieve the three dimensional effect, he
uses three to four layers of sheet silver, with the various elements
all brazed together to make the composite. This technique is called "overlay."
It is very labor intensive work that must be carried out with great
care. We keep a few of his bracelet in inventory, but most are custom
made to your wrist size. Buckles are usually in inventory. Cody sticks
to his three main themes, but precisely, no two bracelets are alike,
since he does use a bit of "artistic license." All metals
are either 14 kt gold or sterling silver.
Note: Because the recent
prices of gold fluctuate so much, the prices for pieces with 14 kt
gold are approximate. We will quote you a final price. We raise the
prices only to compensate for the increased prices of gold.

asked my wife, "what good is that beauty if no one can see it?"
Her answer, "I can see it!" It is a conversation piece, for
sure, since she readily takes it off to show the inside. It always is
greeted with great excitement. You may have your choice of horses, the
canyon scene, or the storyteller scene. To see another version of an
Inner Beauty, the canyon scene, click

Zuni Inlay-Overlay Artistry
Zuni
jewelers have long been noted for their intricate designs with stone
and shell. The "overlay-inlay" technique shown here combines
the art of the silversmith and the lapidary artist. There is some
debate about who "invented" this style. However, one version
is that Dennis Edaakie made up the design at the request of a Gallup
trader, and went on to win a first place ribbon for this piece in the
1970 Gallup Ceremonial. The style has since become very popular.
Described as "overlay-inlay," this sounds like
double-speak. In some ways it is similar to Hopi overlay work. The
jeweler prepares a simple backing of sheet-silver, then prepares a
second piece of the same size and shape. The design is cut out of the
second piece with a fine jeweler's saw. The second piece, with the
designs, is then "sweat" soldered onto the plain piece. In
Hopi work, the design within the cutout area is enhanced by making it
a contrast, either texturing it or oxidizing it. In the Zuni pieces,
relying on their lapidary expertise, the design is made colorful by
inlaying stone and shell pieces within the cutout area. As you can
imagine, this requires very precise fitting. The result is a beautiful
surface of silver and stones.

Banteah, Zuni.
These
Zuni jewelers have fashioned this piece featuring a humming bird of
Abalone shell, coral and mother of pearl. The intricate border inlay

pieces of overlay-inlay, there is a small, silver loop at the top,
back of the piece so it can be hung from a chain for showing as a
pendant. Additionally, a pin with safety catch is across the back, so
it can be worn as a pin. This is a handsome pendant or pin.

Laconsello, Zuni.
The
rainbow man is a symbol of rain and, hence, life for the Zuni farmer.

another symbol of life. Rudy and Nancy have used a number of
semi-precious stones for the rainbow man, surrounded by a border of
turquoise. As with many pieces of overlay-inlay, there is a small,
silver loop at the top, back of the piece so it can be hung from a
chain and worn as a pendant. Additionally, a pin with safety catch is
across the back, so it can be worn as a pin.

Estate Jewelry
Following are a few items that we have picked up at
estate sales. We have priced them at what we think would be their
fair, retail value; the price we think you would pay if buying
directly from the artist. We have then discounted them 50%. The artist
is identified by the jeweler's hallmark stamped on the back of each
piece. The pieces may have some slight scratches, but we do not buy
pieces that show excessive "wear and tear." Our yardstick,
would we be proud to wear that piece of jewelry. We offer our standard
10-day return policy for a full refund of the item's price. (We do not
return the cost of packing, shipping and insurance, normally $15. This
reduces the number of "tire kickers.")

Contemporary
Navajo Pearls. During the early days of Navajo silversmithing, the

were frequently called "Navajo Pearls." Paul has taken this
age-old technique and made this contemporary sterling silver necklace.

long.

and Crafts Association. He leans toward the innovative and
contemporary side. Al traces his signature geometric designs back to
